Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Prepare for cutting timber or engineered wood product
  • Determine job requirements and cutting list from work order or instruction and, where required, confirm with appropriate person
  • Confirm health and safety requirements for cutting task according to workplace procedures
  • Identify type and quantity of product to be cut and obtain product from storage
  • Plan product cutting patterns according to cutting list
  • Select, fit and use personal protective equipment
  • Select appropriate cutting equipment and check for operational effectiveness according to manufacturer instructions
  • Set up saw sequences according to work order and cutting list
       
Element: Cut timber or engineered wood product with power-driven saw
  • Use equipment according to manufacturer instructions and workplace health and safety and environmental protection practices and/or procedures
  • Mark up product and set stops for cutting
  • Follow cutting sequence to produce required quantity
  • Check cuts for length and/or angle within set tolerance
  • Dispose of incorrect cuts, off-cuts and sub-standard products according to workplace environmental protection practices and/or procedures
  • Monitor mechanical feed systems, if fitted
  • Stack product in designated location safely according to workplace procedure
  • Identify routine processing problems, and resolve or report to appropriate personnel

  • Lock out equipment according to workplace health and safety procedures
  • Check saw blades for bluntness or damage
  • Remove and replace saw blades according to manufacturer recommendations
  • Dispose of used blades according to workplace environmental protection practices and/or procedures
  • Complete basic non-specialist maintenance of equipment
  • Keep machine clear of dust and debris according to workplace health and safety procedures
  • Record and report equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel

Assessment Tasks

Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
